Review: Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre

The Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre is one of the more affordable Marriott Bonvoy options in Greater Vancouver.  While visiting Vancouver for the weekend, we decided to give this hotel a try.

Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre Review

Location

The Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre is located in Burnaby, BC, just east of Vancouver.  It’s not exactly close to any major tourist attractions, but it is conveniently located very close to BCIT, the popular Metrotown shopping mall, and Playland Amusement Park.

The hotel sits along the busy Trans-Canada Highway, making it easy to connect to North Vancouver or downtown if you have a car.  Without a car, this location honestly isn’t the best as it’s not very accessible by public transit.

Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre Parking

Thankfully, parking is complimentary for guests staying at the Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre!  This is a big plus as many other hotels in Greater Vancouver charge a lot for parking.

The guest parking is located underneath the hotel in the underground parkade.  We had no issues finding an available spot. There is an elevator that takes you right up to the lobby.

When you check in, they will ask if you’re parking your car overnight and register your license plate.  You are free to enter and exit throughout your stay.

Lobby and Check-In

The lobby is quite grand with very high ceilings.

There’s a small seating area and even a Starbucks cafe.

A short ride up the escalator takes you to the Grand Villa Casino, as well as the hotel’s restaurants.

We checked in a little before 3pm and our room was already ready for us.

  • Check-in time: 3:00pm
  • Check-out time: 11:00am

Bonvoy Elite Status Recognition

Upon check-in, we were thanked for our loyalty and informed we were upgraded to a high floor corner room with a balcony on the 19th floor.  Thanks to our Platinum Elite status, we often get upgraded to suites; however, we could see that all the suites were fully booked so they gave us the best available room.

The front desk agent could not have been more kind and enthusiastic.  He even wished us a happy anniversary, something that was noted when we made the reservation.  Later on in the evening when we returned from dinner, there was a lovely anniversary card and gift waiting for us!

Due to our status, we were given a choice of welcome gift: 1000 points or a $10 food and beverage credit.  Additionally, since this hotel doesn’t have a lounge, they gave us a voucher for a complimentary breakfast for two.

We were also offered a late checkout of 4pm.  And before we left the desk, he also offered us bottled water with passion fruit hydration tablets.  That was a first for us – what a nice touch!

  • 1 King Bed Guest Room

Room Review: 1 King, Skyline View, High Floor with Balcony

We booked the entry level 1 King room.  The day before arrival, we received a notification on the Marriott Bonvoy app that our room had been upgraded to a 1 King, High Floor, Skyline View room with balcony.

We were assigned Room 1912, a corner room on the 19th floor, overlooking the Trans-Canada Highway with views of the mountains and Burnaby high rises.

The room is listed as 360 sq.ft. but it felt fairly spacious.  As for the balcony, however, it was very tiny.  Not even a chair would fit on it.

Entryway

Upon entering the room, there was a closet to the left and bathroom to the right.

Inside the closet was a safe, iron, ironing board, hangers, and shelving unit.

Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre Coffee

Past the closet is a small nook with a single-serve Cusinart coffee machine, bottled water, tea bags, and ice bucket.  In the cabinet below is a mini fridge.

The coffee was not the best quality, but also not the worst I’ve had in a hotel.

Bathroom

The bathroom was a decent size and most importantly, it was nice and clean.

There was ample counter space, a lighted makeup mirror, hair dryer, and even a few individual-sized toiletries (mouthwash, hand lotion, vanity kit and shoe mitt).

Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre Toiletries

There was a shower only, no bathtub, and the water pressure was good.  Shampoo, conditioner and body wash were provided inside the shower.

Bedroom

The king bed was comfortable, with what felt like a mattress topper.  However the pillows weren’t the most comfortable.

I also wish the bed had a thicker duvet blanket.  The one it had wasn’t very cozy and I had to turn the heat up.

As for the heating and cooling system, it worked quickly but was quite noisy.  In addition, the balcony doors don’t seem to be sealed well and let in a lot of noise from outside.  It wasn’t terrible for us, but I could see how many people might have trouble sleeping with it if they’re sensitive.

Next to the bed were two side tables, lamps, phone and alarm clock.  The lamps had USB charging (but not USB-C), so I had to charge my phone on the desk since the wall outlets by the bed were all used up by the lamp and alarm clock.

Work Space and Sitting Area

In front of the bed was a large desk with a lamp and rolling swivel chair.

Above the desk was a nice, big TV.

Next to the window sat a comfy chaise lounge chair.

Overall, the room was clean and spacious, but pretty lacklustre.

Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre Restaurants

The hotel has six dining options available:

  • Atlas Steak + Fish
  • Villa Bistro
  • Starbucks
  • Personas
  • Chow Noodle Bar
  • Centro Bar

All are available on the second floor, with the exception of Starbucks, which is on the ground floor.

Personas, Chow Noodle Bar, and Centro Bar are all located within the Grand Villa Casino.

There’s also a small self-serve “market” in the hallway between the lobby and elevators.  Here you’ll find a variety of snacks and drinks which you can scan and pay for at the kiosk.

Villa Bistro Breakfast

We had dinner outside of the hotel for our annivesary, so the only dining we did inside the hotel was for breakfast.

As mentioned, we were given a complimentary breakfast voucher upon check-in.  We had been told that we could order off the a la carte menu, including one drink.

However, when we arrived at the restaurant, we were informed that we could only choose the Continental Breakfast or Villa Bistro Sandwich, and a drink.  All others would be an additional $5 surcharge.

This was honestly a bit disappointing and didn’t fully make sense, since the option I wanted, the Brioche French Toast, was actually listed as costing less than the Continental Breakfast.

However, we were happy that at least breakfast was included and I went with the Continental Breakfast while Ryan got the Villa Bistro Sandwich.

My breakfast consisted of a large bowl of fruit, small apple danish, and a yogurt parfait.  I enjoyed the yogurt parfait and the danish was good, although I wish it was larger.

Ryan, on the other hand, quite enjoyed his breakfast sandwich and the potatoes were nice and crispy.

Villa Bistro Breakfast Coffee

We both ordered coffee for our drink and we were given a whole pot!  And thankfully, it tasted much better than the coffee in our room.  Our waitress even offered to make me a coffee to go, which I thought was nice.

Hours: 6:30am-11:30am daily

Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre Fitness Centre

The hotel’s fitness centre is located on the third floor.  Inside you’ll find some treadmills, step machine, bikes, weight machines and free weights.

There are also cold bottled waters available and towels.

Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre Gym

It is open 24 hours, seven days a week.

Pool and Sauna

Unfortunately, the Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre does not have a pool.  It does, however, have a hot tub and sauna located next to the gym.  However, it was closed during our stay so we didn’t have a chance to check it out.

Grand Villa Casino

One major perk of staying at the Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre is that there is a large casino located right within the hotel.  It is conveniently located on the second floor, right above the lobby.

The casino itself was bigger than I expected and spans two large floors.  It was also quite the busy place on a Saturday night.  Ryan and I are not casino-goers, but we thought we’d check it out for fun.  It felt like quite the happening place and we enjoyed an hour inside looking around and playing the slot machines.

We were also impressed by the food outlets inside, although we were too full to try them.  We did, however, take advantage of the free instant coffee machines lol.

Final Verdict

The Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre is a nice, clean, moderately priced hotel outside of the downtown Vancouver core.  It offers a fun casino, free parking, and a number of restaurants.

If you’re looking for a decently priced hotel, have a car, and don’t mind not being in the center of the city, this hotel is a good option.  However, if you’re looking for something a bit more modern, I’d opt for the Delta Hotels by Marriott Delta Vancouver Hotel, or if you want to be along the skytrain line, go for the Civic Hotel.
