Cabin In The Yukon – Where To Stay In Yukon To See Northern Lights

A cabin in the Yukon is an excellent choice when choosing where to stay in the Yukon to see Northern Lights.  Yukon accommodations range from mid-range hotels to remote cabins in the wilderness.  We chose to stay at a cabin at Muktuk Adventures just outside of Whitehorse, and it was one of our favourite places we’ve ever stayed!  Here is our complete review of this cabin in the Yukon and why you need to stay here!

Location of Muktuk Adventures Cabin in the Yukon

This luxury cabin in the Yukon is located about a 20 minute drive outside of Whitehorse.  The location is perfect because it is far enough outside the city’s light pollution, making it a perfect place to stay to see the Northern Lights!

How to get to Muktuk Adventures Cabin in the Yukon

Since this cabin is outside of the city, you’ll either need to drive yourself to Muktuk Adventures or contact them ahead of time to arrange a pick up.

Driving from Whitehorse, drive north on the Alaska Highway (Highway 1) until you see the Muktuk Adventures sign on the right side of the road, as shown below.

Continue on a little further, and pay close attention to a small blue Muktuk sign and gravel road with a street sign saying Husky Trail.  This is the small road you’ll want to turn onto, and it’s easy to miss!

Muktuk Adventures Turn Off

As you drive down this narrow, long dirt road, you will likely ask yourself, “Am I going the right way?” Yes, you are 🙂  Keep driving, slowly, for about 4 kilometres

We enjoyed the little signs on the trees along the way.

You will eventually see the cabin on the right, but if you are just arriving to check in, keep driving down until you reach the lodge.  This is where the main office is to check in.

What to expect when staying at Muktuk Adventures Cabin in the Yukon:

The cabin is two floors, with the living room, dining area, kitchen and bathroom on the main floor, and the sleeping area on the second floor loft.

Living Area

The living room area is comfy and cozy with the fireplace right there.  There are a number of books you can read, but no TV (which you shouldn’t miss anyway).

Bedroom

The sleeping area is on the second floor loft which overlooks the living room.  There are three beds available. The bed by the window has a gorgeous view overlooking the river and trees.

Bathroom

There is a spacious bathroom on the main floor, complete with a flush toilet and warm shower.  Just note that it is only available for use between June and October, as there is no running water from mid-October til June.  During the winter months, you will have to use the outhouse located just a few steps from the patio, and the showers within the main lodge.

Kitchen

A highlight of this Yukon cabin is that it has a full kitchen with everything you will need!  There is a mini fridge, stove, sink, kettle, coffee maker, dishes, utensils, cutlery – everything!

There is also a barbecue on the balcony.  You will have everything you need to cook all your meals at the cabin if you wish to do so (we did!)

Note: Grocery prices are higher in the Yukon than elsewhere in Canada.  For example, when we bought a gallon of milk at Walmart it was $8.99 (and that was on sale!) versus the $5 we usually spend in BC!  A head of broccoli was $10. So, be prepared.

Parking

Parking at the cabin is free and there is lots of room to park right at the cabin.

Views

The views from the cabin are incredible! From the bed, living room, dining area, and balcony, you’ll have fantastic views over the Takhini River and forest.  Better yet, you can stay up and see the Northern Lights right from the balcony if you are lucky!

Cabin in the Yukon Morning View

This is where to stay in Yukon to see the Northern Lights as you don’t even have to leave the cabin!

Outdoor Area

The large balcony is a lovely place to sit and watch the midnight sun in the summer, have a cup of coffee in the morning, or barbecue in the evening.  There is also a nice fire pit on the side of the cabin as well that you can sit around and roast marshmallows!

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available at the cabin!  This is great as we didn’t have any cell reception while there.

Why you need to stay at Muktuk Adventures Cabin in the Yukon

Northern Lights

As mentioned previously, this is a great place to stay if you want to see the Northern Lights as its location away from the light pollution of Whitehorse allows you to see them directly overhead.  We even managed to catch a glimpse of them when we stayed at the cabin in summertime! And if you visit in early fall, you can even head down to the river and see them reflected on the water.

Dogs

The dogs are the highlight of course! This is a place for people who love dogs, afterall.  There are over 100 working sled dogs on site.  While staying at the cabin, you can visit with them anytime you wish.  They are all very friendly!

And if you visit during the winter, you can have an incredible experience going dog sledding (at an additional cost)!

There are also about 30 retired dogs that stay inside the main lodge.  They are lovely to visit with as well.

Hiking

The cabin sits on the vast property and there are many trails to explore, either on your own or on a guided walk.

Muktuk Adventures Dog Walk

We went on a guided walk with one of the dogs through the woods and by the river.

Canoeing

Another great activity that you can do at Muktuk is canoeing down the river!

Privacy

This cabin in the Yukon is an ideal place to stay if you are looking for privacy.  The cabin’s location up from the main lodge makes it feel very private.  Looking out from the cabin, all you can see are trees, sky and the river.  No buildings, no cars, no people.

Hospitality

Last but not least, a great reason to stay here is the warm hospitality of Manuela and Jeff!  They made us feel very welcome, like friends or even family.  They definitely made our stay all that much better.

Muktuk Adventures Cabin Fruit

We appreciated all their thoughtful little touches in the cabin to make our stay that much more comfortable.  For example, warm slippers by the door, a bowl of fresh fruit, fresh pile of dry firewood and newspapers, and teaching us how to start the fire.
