After a luxurious stay at The Naka Island, we headed north of Phuket to the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa. Our two-night stay was full of family fun: hours and hours spent in South East Asia’s largest pool, relaxing beach time, Kids Club play adventures, bike rides, animal visits, and so much more.
In this JW Marriott Khao Lak review, we’re sharing our honest thoughts on staying in a Deluxe Lagoon Pool Access Room with our 7-year-old daughter and reveal whether or not we think this resort is worth booking for a family holiday.

JW Marriott Khao Lak Review
To wrap up our week in Phuket, we wanted to find a resort that our daughter would truly love. Her must-haves? A pool and kids club. There were tons of hotels in Phuket that met this criteria, but we also had some Marriott Bonvoy points and Free Night Awards to use so we narrowed our search to Marriott Bonvoy properties.
We saw the most amazing reviews for the JW Marriott Khao Lak but the location outside of Phuket initially put us off. However, when we saw just how many great activities they have for kids, and of course that big beautiful pool and sandy beach, we decided to just go for it.
Location
The JW Marriott Khao Lak is located in Phang Nga province in the coastal area of Khao Lak, about 83km north of Phuket International Airport. Located right on Khuk Khak Beach, it has beautiful views of the Andaman Sea.

There are a few small restaurants and convenience shops immediately outside the resort, but the village requires a short shuttle ride to get to.
The somewhat remote location is perfect for those wanting a peaceful beach getaway, far from the party scene in Phuket.
JW Marriott Khao Lak Address: 41/12 Moo 3 Khuk Khak, Takua Pa District, Phang Nga, Thailand, 82220
How to Get to JW Marriott Khao Lak
From Phuket International Airport, it’s about an hour and 15 minutes to two-hour drive to the resort. It’s best to book a shuttle or private driver in advance, or rent a car to drive yourself.
By Grab/Taxi
Grab does not reliably operate in Khao Lak and we could not find any drivers to accept our rides between Phuket and Khao Lak. We instead had to take a taxi from Phuket to Khao Lak, which was surprisingly more affordable than we were expecting (it was the same price as the Grab SUV that cancelled on us).
From Ao Po Grand Marina in Phuket to JW Marriott Khao Lak, we paid 2300 THB ($68 USD) for a luxurious private taxi van for the 1.5 hour drive.
By Private Transfer
Private airport transfers can be booked online through various operators, but we like to book on Klook so that we can read reviews and it just seems more reliable.
The company we went with on Klook was very reliable – they showed up right on time, gave us bottled water and drove very safely. It cost 1880 THB ($55 USD) for the one way private transfer in a sedan (max. 3 passengers).
By Hotel Airport Shuttle
The hotel operates an airport shuttle that you can reserve ahead of time but we found it overly expensive. The cost is 4100 THB ($116 USD) per direction (8200 THB roundtrip). It’s much better value to book a private driver.
By Car
Renting a car at the airport in Phuket is another option if you don’t mind driving and want the freedom to explore Khao Lak on your own. We would definitely do this next time as the roads were very good and there wasn’t too much traffic between the airport and Khao Lak.
Parking
The JW Marriott Khao Lak offers complimentary on-site parking so if you’ve rented a car, you’ll have no issues parking at the resort. They also have an electric car charging station.
Getting Around Khao Lak
The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to take guests into town to the local market. We didn’t use it ourselves, but they said if we were interested, we could book it through the hotel concierge.

How Much Does JW Marriott Khao Lak Cost?
Cash rates start around 5,000 THB/night ($149 USD) for an entry level room in low season. When we visited in April, the cost was 9,021 THB/night ($268 USD) for our entry level Deluxe Lagoon Pool View Room. You can check current rates for JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa using our Booking.com link.
Is JW Marriott Khao Lak a Good Use of Marriott Bonvoy Points?
For travellers with Marriott Bonvoy points or Free Night Awards, JW Marriott Khao Lak is an excellent resort to redeem them at. I’ve seen base level rooms for 37,000 points/night, making them a great way to use up a 35K Free Night Award with a small top-up of points.
We decided to book an entry-level Deluxe Lagoon Pool View Room for 47,000 points/night. The Pool Access room was more desirable but was significantly more points per night.
Since Ryan and I each had a 35K FNA to burn, we made two separate bookings. We each used our 35K FNA with a top-up of 12,000 points each, and then emailed the hotel to request the two reservations to be linked.
Since the cash rate would have been 9,021 THB/night ($268 USD), we ended up with a CPP of 0.6. A pretty poor CPP, but since we had to use up our FNAs anyway, we didn’t mind. We also ended up getting upgraded (more on that below) which brought up the value.
Arrival and Check-in
Our taxi dropped us off at the hotel’s entrance at 4:40pm. We were instantly greeted and the bellman took our bags and escorted us into the lobby.

The lobby was a sea of guests checking in and out which was honestly a little overwhelming. Since it was so busy, we were instructed to grab a seat and someone would be over to assist us once they were ready. Unfortunately, there were no empty seats in the lobby so we had to stand until one of the staff noticed and escorted us outside where there were some empty chairs.

It was thankfully much quieter and calmer outside so we didn’t mind. We were also brought out some refreshing sorbet as a welcome treat along with cold towels. It was a nice touch.

After 10 minutes, we were finally able to complete our check-in. They were very efficient and quickly explained the various activity and dining schedules while providing us with some handouts and a helpful map. We were then escorted to our room, which was nice, because the resort is massive and it is very easy to get lost.

- Standard Check-In Time: 3:00pm
- Standard Check-out Time: 12:00pm

Bonvoy Elite Status Recognition
During check-in, Ryan’s Bonvoy Platinum Elite status was recognized and he was thanked for his loyalty. As a welcome gift, they offered us the option of the complimentary daily breakfast buffet or points, but we of course chose the breakfast.
Even though we booked two separate reservations, and I only have Gold status myself, we were still given the free breakfast buffet for both nights.
As for the room upgrade, we were thankfully upgraded to a Deluxe Lagoon Pool Access room – yay! This was the room we were really hoping for and we actually preferred it over a suite.

Room Review: Deluxe Lagoon Pool Access Room
We originally booked the Deluxe Lagoon Pool View room as we were able to cover the cost with our Marriott free night awards and points. However, we were upgraded one room category higher to a Deluxe Lagoon Pool Access room thanks to Ryan’s Platinum Elite status!
When we originally booked, the Deluxe Lagoon Pool Access room was going for 13,531 THB/night (about $400 USD) which was $132 USD/night more than the Pool View room. So, we were very grateful for this nice upgrade!
We were assigned Room #3017, which was on a quieter side of the resort, which we were very happy with. The room appeared to be newly renovated with beautiful Thai details and decor.
Entryway
Upon entering the room, there were two spacious closets on the left with a bench in between where we could put our luggage. The bathroom was on the right.

Inside the first closet was the safe, iron and ironing board.

Two pairs of slippers, shoe horn, shoe mitt, a sewing kit, and laundry service list were provided.

The second closet had plenty of hangers for all our clothes, and a lovely woven beach bag for us to use for the duration of our stay.

Bathroom
The bathroom was fairly spacious, with a large bathtub, separate shower, and toilet stall.

There was a sliding mirrored door that separated the bathtub from the bedroom.

Bath salts and bath soap were provided by the bathtub.

The sink area had plenty of counter space. On the left were bottles of water and on the right, a lighted magnifying mirror.

In the drawer below the sink were some complimentary amenities: toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, a razor, shaving cream, shower cap, emery board, cotton rounds, cotton buds, and a comb.

In the open cabinet were extra towels, wash cloths, and a Panasonic hair dryer.

The shower was quite spacious with both a handheld showerhead and a true rainfall showerhead in the ceiling. I was impressed with how strong the water pressure was!

Bedroom
The bedroom featured a large and very comfortable king-sized bed. When we arrived, we found the bed beautifully decorated with towel art and a tropical arrangement for our daughter’s birthday.

There were bedside tables and wall lamps on both sides of the bed, along with a phone and alarm clock.

We really appreciated that there were lighting controls on both sides of the bed along with two USB outlets and a universal outlet. It was so nice to each be able to charge all our devices at the same time next to the bed.

On the wall opposite the bed was a large TV and large counter, which was handy for placing all our random gear (pamphlets, cameras, sunglasses etc).
Coffee and Minibar
Next to the closet was a small coffee nook with a Nespresso machine (yay!) and assortment of pods. A kettle and complimentary water were also provided.

Inside the drawer below were some Dilmah teas, sugar, and powdered creamer.

The cabinet opened up to a small, empty fridge – perfect for storing leftovers and drinks.

Sitting Area
There was a nice, round dining table with two wooden chairs. On top was a lovely birthday cake that the staff had prepared for our daughter.

There was also a platter of fresh local oranges, which was a nice touch.

Next to the table were some universal outlets so it could double as a workspace, if needed, since there’s no desk in the room.

On the opposite side was a sofa bed with lots of comfy pillows and a coffee table with local magazines.
Air Conditioning
The air conditioning in the room worked very well – almost too well. We often felt a bit too cold, especially when coming in from the pool.
Thankfully, there was also a ceiling fan above the bed so sometimes we just used the fan rather than the AC.

There was also a large dehumidifier in the room which was a first for us. We could definitely tell the difference when we walked into our room. That thing sucked out so much moisture from the air – we couldn’t believe it! We had to empty it multiple times a day.
Pool Access Terrace
The best part of the room was of course the pool access right off of the terrace.

Large sliding doors opened up to the terrace, where there were two lounge chairs and a small side table. A bar on the wall functioned as a convenient place to hang our wet towels and swimsuits.

From the terrace, there were steps leading into the 2.4km long lazy river.

The water was a bit deep for our daughter but thankfully right across from our room was a shallow area where she could splash around comfortably.
We found it strange that no pool towels were provided in the room, but we were able to find some nearby.
Turndown Service and Housekeeping
On our first night, we returned to the room to find that they had transformed the sofa into a very comfortable bed for our daughter.

Every evening, the housekeeping staff came by to turn down our room. Curtains were closed, a bottle of water and a glass were left at our bedside, and slippers were laid next to the bed.

A bedtime playlist was left on the bedside table with a QR code to scan to listen.

They also left us some of the signature JW tea made from the garden – another special touch.
The housekeeping staff were so friendly and kind, and took very good care of our room. We were very impressed by the cleanliness of the room.
JW Marriott Khao Lak Restaurants
For a resort of this size, it’s no surprise that there are a total of 10 dining venues to choose from:
- Drift Beach Bar & Grill (Mediterranean dinner restaurant)
- Olive (Italian dinner restaurant)
- Ta-Krai (Thai dinner restaurant)
- Sakura (Japanese dinner restaurant)
- Waterfront (International breakfast and lunch)
- Beach Bar (International light bites and bar on the beach)
- Sala (International light bites and refreshments poolside)
- Deli (Casual indoor cafe)
- Infinity Pool Bar (International light bites and bar in the pool)
- Aquamarine Pool Bar (International light bites and bar in the pool)
Due to our short stay, we were only able to try three of the venues, but were quite impressed by each of them.
Waterfront Breakfast Buffet
This breakfast buffet is fantastic with a wide variety of options. It was thankfully included with our stay, and it seemed to be included in all cash stays booked directly with Marriott from what I could see at the time of our booking. If your room rate doesn’t include the breakfast buffet, I’d definitely suggest adding it on.

The buffet offered many different sections with dishes changing slightly each day. In the center of the buffet were the fresh juices, fresh fruits, cereals, salads, deli meats and cheeses, spreads and more.

On the left was a section where you could get freshly squeezed juice, smoothies and yogurt, followed by the Indian kitchen and vegetarian section.

At the back was the egg station where you could get all kinds of made-to-order eggs.

On the right, the Asian kitchen, including a noodle station and dim sum.

Then there was the bakery with all kinds of pastries plus pancakes, waffles, and all kinds of toppings.

Finally, there was a special stand-alone Thai section with traditional Thai dishes.

It’s best to visit the buffet as early as possible (we went right when it opened) as it gets crazy busy being the only breakfast option at the resort. The dining area is large with lots of tables but when it gets completely full with families, it honestly feels overwhelming.

I did catch a glimpse of a separate section reserved for adults only which looked much more calm, but since we had our daughter with us, we had to sit in the family section.
Dinner at Ta Krai
I made a dinner reservation at Ta-Krai for our second night. This Thai restaurant is located by the central infinity pool, with both indoor and outdoor seating.

We chose to sit outdoors so that we could watch the evening Thai performance that occurs just outside the restaurant.
To be honest, we were not too impressed with the service at first as our server seemed to have forgotten about us. We waited over half an hour before finally calling someone over to take our order, while all the other tables had already been served.

However, the food here was absolutely delicious and we appreciated that they had a kid’s menu as well. Our daughter loved her noodles.

At the end of our dinner, the staff all came out singing happy birthday to our daughter and surprised her with a mango sticky rice (her favourite)!

Aquamarine Pool Bar
This pool bar was located right by our room so we swam over one afternoon to try it out. It was fun sitting in the water while enjoying our yummy drinks and snacks – a first for our daughter.

The Thai milk tea was surprisingly more delicious than we expected and they served us some complimentary bar snacks as well.
After we finished our drinks, we noticed a sign that said “Adults Only” – oops. I guess we weren’t supposed to bring our daughter to the pool bar but the server didn’t say anything to us and there were no other guests there anyway haha.
Is Dining at JW Marriott Khao Lak Expensive?
The food is considerably more expensive at the hotel than at local establishments. For example, the Som Tum (papaya salad) was 340 THB at Ta-Krai but only 80 THB at the local restaurant we went to right next to the hotel. However, the prices at the JW are still reasonable when comparing them to prices at similar hotels elsewhere in the world.
For our dinner at Ta-Krai, we spent a total of 2,289 THB ($68 USD) for two drinks, an appetizer, two main dishes, a kid’s dish, and tax and service charges. We found this to be good value, especially considering how much the food cost us at the JW Marriott Guanacaste just a few months prior (it was at least double the price).
The breakfast buffet is great value as there is enough to satisfy you for breakfast and lunch combined. We found that we were full enough from breakfast that we never even ate lunch while at the resort.
Nearby Restaurants
There are a number of local Thai restaurants within steps of the resort if you would like something a little more affordable or just grow tired of the resort food.
Inexpensive beach huts serving up casual Thai food can be found on the left side of the beach, as well as a couple of larger Thai restaurants down a dirt path on the right side of the resort.

We decided to try Phen Restaurant, located down the path running down the right side of the resort. It had an extensive menu offering not only Thai food but also Western dishes like spaghetti, sandwiches, burgers, and steak. The Thai food was very good and very affordable.
Resort Amenities
JW Marriott Khao Lak is home to Southeast Asia’s longest swimming pool, but that’s not its only exciting feature. The resort also offers an amazing farm and garden, bike paths, a wonderful kids club, an educational Bamboo Shark nursery, a beautiful white sand beach, and more.
Let’s take a look at the awesome amenities we got to experience first-hand during our stay.
Lagoon Pool
At 2.4 km long, you can spend all day floating down the lazy river, discovering every hidden corner of this massive pool.

On our first full day, that is exactly what we decided to do. We blew up our pool floaties that we brought with us, and jumped into the water from our room. Slowly floating down the lazy river, with a goal of eventually finding the Aqua Play Zone.

We eventually came across the main central infinity pool located by the beach and some of the resort’s restaurants. This appeared to be a more popular area for adults.
We continued floating onwards until we came to the Aqua Play Zone, popular with families with kids. Here we enjoyed the waterslide, wave pool, and super fun water trampoline.

Note that the resort does not provide pool floaties so plan to bring some from home. If you haven’t brought any, the resort does have a gift shop where you can buy some at a very inflated (ha!) price. You can save some money by walking just outside the hotel to the convenience store where they also sell them.
Since the pool is so large, it never felt crowded, especially not in the areas by our room. It was truly so much fun just stepping out from our room and floating aimlessly around the resort.
JW Marriott Khao Lak Beach
This was the best beach we encountered during our Phuket-area vacation. The sand was nice and clean, the water was warm, and the waves were not too big so it was actually swimmable.

The beach was so wide that it never felt busy. There were tons of available lounge chairs, and there was a beach hut with all kinds of beach toys to borrow.

Our daughter was thrilled with all the sand toys to make a sand castle and Ryan couldn’t help but borrow a boogie board to have some fun in the waves.

What we also really loved was that no one comes to bother you on the beach (unlike what we’ve experienced in some other countries). It was such a beautifully relaxing place to spend a morning or afternoon.
Family by JW Club
This is one of the most beautifully designed kids clubs we’ve ever set our eyes on. And it’s all included as part of your stay!

The kids club is very large with different themed areas throughout that make it fun for both young kids and older ones.
Kids can be signed in and left at the JW Club or parents can stay and play.

Our daughter loved the garden themed play area, complete with pretend eggs to harvest and pretend veggies and fruits to pick. There was also a fun restaurant area where she could pretend cook for us and serve us.

Then there was the huge jungle gym with climbing nets and a massive ball pit with slides. Such fun!

There were also craft rooms and video games, reading nooks, Lego, and more.

Outside there was a nice sand box and small climbing wall. It was shaded but still pretty hot so it wasn’t in use when we visited.
Hours: 9:00am-7:00pm daily
The JW Garden
This was another highlight of the resort! The JW Garden is extensive, complete with water buffalo, domestic goats, a flock of chickens providing eggs for the resort, and honey bees.

Guests are free to wander the garden, take one of the daily tours, or participate in one of the many complimentary activities offered at the garden.
A 2km-long track loops around the garden and wilderness park, perfect for a peaceful stroll, run or bike ride. It’s lit in the evenings, so guests can use it when the hot sun has gone down.
Fitness Gym
The gym is located on the bottom level of the main resort building, below the lobby, and was actually a very popular place. Ryan always enjoys using the hotel gyms when we travel and normally he’s often the only one there. But here at the JW, it got quite busy!

The gym is very nice and modern with all kinds of equipment. There were numerous treadmills, ellipticals, and a step machine.

There were various weight machines, as well as free weights.

The staff are also incredibly friendly here. They provided complimentary water, refreshing lemongrass drinks, snacks, and cold towels.
Games Room
Just outside the gym and kids club, by the Deli, there is an indoor games area with foosball tables, air hockey, and table tennis. This was quite popular with families and older kids. It was also a nice way to escape the heat and have fun in the cool air conditioning.

Resort Activities
The resort has a massive activity schedule, one for adults and another one for kids. Every day is packed with complimentary fun activities, as well as some optional paid ones.
From biking and kayaking, to waterfall hikes and temple tours, towel art folding, chocolate making, magicians, t-shirt painting, crossfit, yoga, Muay Thai, and more, you really won’t get bored here for a week! There were so many activities we wanted to do but just not enough time unfortunately.
If you see an activity you’re interested in participating in, make sure to reserve your spot by booking online as some have limited availability and they do fill up.
Here we’ll review the activities we actually got to take part in.
Marshmallow Roasting
Every evening on the beach, the JW team sets up a fire pit for roasting marshmallows.

This complimentary activity is very popular with the kids so make sure to get there early. It’s offered nightly from 6-7pm.
Bike Rental
Bikes are available for rent from the fitness centre and are available in all sizes so the whole family can enjoy a bike ride together. The first hour is free and then it’s 100 THB/hour after that.

There is a lovely bike path about 2-km long that takes you around the JW Garden and Farm.

This was one of our daughter’s favourite things about the resort as she loves bike rides! We went in the afternoon and it was very hot and humid, so we recommend going early in the morning, if possible.
Bamboo Shark Nursery Experience
A really cool feature of the JW Marriott Khao Lak is its in-house Bamboo Shark Nursery and Conservation Center.

Twice per day they offer a hands-on learning experience, open to all guests. Make sure to register ahead of time as each time slot can only have a maximum of 15 guests and it gets filled up quickly.
Our experience began with a short video and informative presentation by one of the marine biologists. We then got to check out the tanks with the baby bamboo sharks before they get released into the wild.

The marine biologist was great at answering all the kids’ questions. It was a really neat experience.
Fire Show
The fire show occurs three times per week next to the Beach Bar, on the Infinity Lawn. This impressive show starts promptly at 8:30pm and only lasts about 12 minutes, so make sure to get there early.
We arrived late and only caught the last minute of the show – our daughter was so disappointed to miss it.
Coastal Awakening Show
This traditional Thai performance occurs twice per week at 6pm next to Ta-Krai restaurant. It showcases traditional dance, puppetry, storytelling and muay thai.

Coconut Boat
The coconut boat floats through the Lagoon Pool past the pool access rooms and common areas daily in the afternoons, offering fresh coconuts to drink.

It was neat to watch and such a fun option. We didn’t try one of the coconuts so I’m not sure how much they cost.
JW Garden Tour and Animal Feeding
Daily tours are offered every morning at the JW Garden. Just meet at the hotel lobby from where you’ll be taken on a short ride to the JW Garden.
Once there, you can feed the resident water buffalo and goats.

You can meet the ducks and chickens that supply the resort with free-range eggs.

Final Thoughts on JW Marriott Khao Lak
This resort truly had everything we could have asked for. An amazing pool, a unique Bamboo Shark Nursery, fantastic farm and garden, lovely bike and running paths, idyllic beach, great food, modern rooms, and more than enough complimentary activities that left us not even needing or wanting to leave the resort. It is definitely one resort we could see ourselves returning to for a longer stay.

Even for couples without kids, we would still recommend staying here. The resort is spread out enough that it didn’t feel overrun with kids and there’s enough for adults to do that it doesn’t feel like strictly just a family resort. It will please adults of all ages and families with kids.
And don’t be put off by the location – we really appreciated the more relaxed vibe of Khao Lak compared to Phuket. The drive is worth it.
