65 Things To Do On Vancouver Island According to a Local

If you are looking for things to do on Vancouver Island, here are 60 of our top suggestions, coming from us locals!I was fortunate to be born and raised on Vancouver Island.  As a child, whenever my mom was at work, my grandparents loved driving me around to find fun new things to do on Vancouver Island.

From a young age I developed a love of exploring this beautiful island.  Even though I moved away for university, traveled the world and met my husband, we still decided to move back and make the island our home.

Until now we love “being tourists” in our own backyard and enjoy sharing with others all that this 460km-long island has to offer.  Below are some of our favorite things to do on Vancouver Island!

65 Things to Do on Vancouver Island

1. Relax at Tigh-na-mara

The tranquil Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort is located in Parksville on 3km of beautiful sandy beach.  It is home to the award-winning Grotto Spa where you can have a dip in the relaxing mineral pool and choose from their top-notch spa treatments.

Our favorite experience at Tigh-Na-Mara is their endless tapas dining experience.  It is only offered to spa guests and you get to dine in your robe while being served an endless offering of delicious tapas!

Tigh Na Mara TapasIf you are looking for relaxing or romantic things to do on Vancouver Island, make sure to add this to the list!

2. Hike Mt. Finalyson

This hike is one of the more popular ones in the Victoria area.  It can be accessed from either Goldstream Park or Bear Mountain.

Mt Finlayson HikeMake sure to wear good shoes as the hike can be quite steep and slippery in parts.  If you are afraid of heights, this one might not be for you.  But if you make it to the top, you can be sure the views will be incredible!

3. Walk the Kinsol Trestle

Located in the Shawnigan Lake area, just north of Victoria, this historic trestle is one of our favorite things to do on Vancouver Island when we are wanting to take in the beautiful outdoors.  The trestle was originally constructed in 1920 and was beautifully restored and re-opened in 2012.  Standing 145 feet above the Koksilah River and running 614 feet in length it is one of the tallest free-standing timber rail trestle structures in the world.

Kinsol TrestleIt is a peaceful 1.2km walk from the parking lot and a lovely place to have a picnic down by the river.

4. Go caving at Horne Lake

Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park is located in the Qualicum Beach area in central Vancouver Island.  There are a number of guided tours to choose from to explore the multiple caves. One cave even has a 7 storey waterfall inside!

If you are looking for adventurous things to do on Vancouver Island, exploring this underground wonderland is a great choice!

5. Find the hidden waterfall

Another one of our favorite things to do on Vancouver Island is searching for waterfalls!  The one at Sombrio Beach has to be our favorite.  It is a bit hidden and can’t be seen from the beach.  But once you find it up the stream, you will be rewarded with an amazing waterfall that you can take a dip under!

Hidden Waterfall Sombrio BeachIf you plan to do a road trip along Vancouver Island’s West Coast, make sure you stop here!

6. Swing at Mystic Beach

Mystic Beach is another great stop to add to your Vancouver Island West Coast Road Trip.  Be prepared for a bit of a hike to the beach through peaceful forest.  Once you reach the beach you will be rewarded with stunning scenic views in every direction.

Swing at Mystic BeachWe love the rope swing on the beach!  And the waterfall off the cliff.

7. Take the boat to Newcastle Island

As a child, I used to love visiting Newcastle Island on school field trips.  This small island is only accessible by foot passenger ferry from Nanaimo or private boat.  It is just a 10 minute ferry ride from Maffeo Sutton Park and costs $8 round trip.  The ferry leaves every half an hour.  You can find current ferry schedules here.

It makes a great day trip or you can camp overnight.  You can hike some of the 22km of light hiking trails around the island, swim off the beaches, kayak around the island, explore the tidal pools, or even book a traditional salmon barbecue to learn more about the unique culture of the Snuneymuxw people.

8. Hike the West Coast Trail

If you are looking for challenging things to do on Vancouver Island, then hiking the West Coast Trail should certainly be on your list!  This popular bucket list hike is 75km long and can be intimidating to even the most seasoned hikers.

If you are up for the challenge, learn how to properly prepare and reserve your spot here!

Tip: If you would like to tackle a shorter version of the hike, you can start at the mid-point entrance at Nitinaht Narrows instead.  You can find out more here.

9. Go surfing in Tofino

Visiting Tofino is no doubt one of the most popular things to do on Vancouver Island.  When I talk to people around the world who have visited Vancouver Island they always bring up Tofino.  This small town on the west coast of Vancouver Island attracts surfers year-round and is known as the undisputed surfing capital of Canada.

With 35km of beaches there is a variety of waves and beaches to suit every skill level. However if cold water surfing is not for you, you can still enjoy watching the surfers from the comfort of your warm hotel room.  The oceanfront Long Beach Lodge Resort offers both surf lessons and oceanview rooms to satisfy both surfers and non-surfers.

10. Have breakfast with a view at the Villa Eyrie

I’ve always loved the Villa Eyrie because of the stunning views!  The resort is nestled in a quiet area on the Malahat, between Victoria and Mill Bay.  Sitting 1880ft above sea level, the views alone are worth a stop here.

Villa Eyrie Breakfast ViewFrom your breakfast table you will have incredible views over the Saanich Inlet and all the way to Mt. Baker and the Olympic mountains!

11. Tube the Cowichan River

This is a very popular summertime activity in the Duncan/Cowichan area!  Whenever we had a hot day, my friends and I would head to the river for a refreshing and relaxing float.

It does take some coordinating as you will need 2 vehicles.  You will need to leave one by the end (Little Beach) and then drive everyone with all the tubes to the starting point in Lake Cowichan.  More conveniently, use a tubing company!  The Tube Shack rents tubes, will hold your car keys, and provides shuttle pick up from Little Beach back to your car!

The float down the river takes approximately 3 hours, depending on water levels/flow.  If you go when water levels are low, you may need to get out at some points and walk a little bit.  Also, if you go in late afternoon, you may get cold as the river will be pretty shaded at that point!

Tip: Wear water shoes or flip flops! If you need to get out and walk a bit, the rocks can be painful on your feet and/or slippery.

12. Go bungee jumping

Just outside of Nanaimo lies more adventurous things to do on Vancouver Island!  For adrenaline junkies, why not bungee jump over the Nanaimo River?!

If bungee jumping isn’t for you, you can also try the swing over the river canyon or go on a zip lining adventure.

13. Sleep in the trees

If you’ve ever wanted to literally sleep in the trees, then a night or two at Free Spirit Spheres is just for you!  This exotic place to stay can be found in the Qualicum Bay area.

There are 3 spheres to choose from and they give a whole new meaning to the term “glamping”.  Staying at these unique accommodations set among the coastal rainforest is one of the coolest things to do on Vancouver Island!

14. Golf at one of the 40+ courses

You may not think of Vancouver Island as a golf destination, but with over 40 courses, it is the only region of Canada where you can golf year-round!  Some of our favorites are The Westin Bear Mountain Victoria Golf Resort, Olympic View and Arbutus Ridge.

Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and the Parliament Buildings are one of the most popular sights to see. Most people stop to take a photo outside this splendid building, but did you know it is free to go inside and take a tour?  Just make sure you leave time to go through security screening (about 15 minutes).

Tip: Make sure you return at night to see the building all lit up!

19. Have afternoon tea at the Empress

When people think of Victoria, they often think of 2 things: High Tea at the Empress Hotel and Butchart Gardens (coming up next).  High Tea at the Empress is one of those iconic things to do on Vancouver Island.

Empress High TeaWe recommend you try it once in your lifetime, even with the hefty price tag ($82/person as of June 2019).

Tip: Make sure to check the dress code first.

20. Wander Butchart Gardens

Butchart Gardens is one of the most popular places that tourists add to their itinerary when visiting Vancouver Island.  Even if you are not that into flowers, the grounds are quite extensive and it is a very nice place to wander around.  We particularly love the Japanese garden, as well as the evening fireworks shows they have during the summer.

21. See the goats on the roof

Have you ever seen goats on a roof?  Neither have we, other than in Coombs!  This is one of the unique things to see on Vancouver Island and is quite a popular stop when headed up island.  You will find them on the roof of the Old Country Market.

That’s not all, though.  The market has a great selection of produce, baked goods, and specialty foods.  We also always make sure to stop at the ice cream stand!

Duncan is the main hub of the Cowichan Valley and every Saturday, rain or shine, there is a great farmers market set up in the city centre.  The Duncan Farmers Market runs from 9am-2pm and is one of the largest markets in BC with over 150 vendors!

Our favorite thing to do is go around lunch time and eat at some of the delicious food vendors!  You can find all kinds of fresh local produce, baked goods, coffee, cheeses, handmade items, etc.

23. Pet the goats at Beacon Hill Park

24. Get ice cream at Chocolats Favoris

If you love ice cream and chocolate, Chocolats Favoris is heaven!  It is seriously our favorite ice cream/dessert shop on the entire island.  We bring all our friends and family here when they visit and every single one of them has left feeling the exact same as us.  We’ve even had friends say they want to come back to Victoria just so they can eat here again!

Chocolats FavorisThese are not just your regular dipped cones.  You can choose from over 10 different types of delicious chocolate to dip your ice cream in.  They also have dessert poutine!!  And it is just as delicious.

25. Eat a cinnamon bun (or 2!) at Old Town Bakery

This little bakery in Ladysmith might just be our favorite bakery in all of the island.  Old Town Bakery is another place we always bring guests for a sweet treat and they all love it!

Cinnamon Buns from Old Town BakeryThe cinnamon buns are what they are best known for but they also have all kinds of delicious freshly baked breads, pies, cakes, cookies, etc as well as lunch options!  We often make the drive to Ladysmith JUST for the warm, gooey, soft cinnamon buns.  Just be sure not to go on a Sunday – they are closed.

27. Check out Englishman River Falls

North of Nanaimo you will find Englishman River Falls Provincial Park.  There is an easy 1.3km loop hike that you can take to see the two gorgeous waterfalls.  It is a lovely hike through the forest, with two bridges that cross the river with great views of the falls.

Englishman River FallsIf you are not bothered by the cold water, you can take a refreshing dip in the river below the falls during the summer months.

28. Explore old growth forest at Cathedral Grove

Cathedral Grove is located within MacMillan Provincial Park, which is just past Coombs.  You can stroll through the well-maintained trails, marveling at the gigantic Douglas fir trees.  Some are over 800 years old and measure 75m in height and 9m in circumference!  It is truly a magical forest to spend a few hours wandering around.

34. Ski at Mt. Washington

When thinking of things to do on Vancouver Island, skiing may not come to mind.  But, in fact, we have two ski resorts on the island!  The largest being Mt. Washington Alpine Resort, located in Courtenay.

Mt. Washington receives some of the biggest snowfalls in North America, with an average of 11m per year.  With over 1700 acres, 505 vertical metres of alpine terrain, 55km of cross-country skiing and 25km of snowshoeing trails, it is a great place to plan a winter adventure!

When people ask what is a Canadian food, most people answer with “poutine!” While it originates on the other side of the country, in Quebec, you can still find some delicious poutine in Victoria.  Our favorite poutine is from La Belle Patate in Esquimalt, just outside downtown Victoria.  It is a tiny, hole in the wall place but pretty authentic!

This was one of my favorite places as a child.  It is a fun and educational place to visit for the whole family.  The centre spans a total of 100 acres and has all kinds of outdoor and indoor exhibits.  The highlight for most is a ride on one of the historic steam locomotives!  Make sure to check the train schedule here.

If you’ve always wanted to see whales up close, here is your chance!  Whale watching is one of the top things to do on Vancouver Island due to the high concentration of killer whales and other whale species in the area.

Mt. Tolmie is one of my favorite spots to take visitors for a panoramic view of Victoria.  While there are many trails within the park and you can hike to the summit, there is also a windy road you can drive up instead.  This makes Mt. Tolmie a great place to take people who aren’t able to hike up for a good view.

49. Walk the breakwater

The Ogden Point Breakwater was built in 1916 and is 762 metres (2500 feet) long.  It is a popular place for a scenic walk, with a lighthouse rewarding you at the end.  Located right next to the cruise ship dock, this walk is perfect for those visiting Victoria on a cruise ship stop.
